For the past 10 years the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) has been hosting a holiday programme for young people during the winter school holiday, at its office in Kewtown, Athlone.
Each year the programme has a different theme, which this year’s one being based on JK Rowling’s Harry Potter series.
The programme ran for two weeks – from Monday June 27 to Friday July 8 – and catered for children aged six to 16 years old, keeping them entertained with activities such as arts and crafts, sports development, team-building, dance and drama activities.
The YMCA’s youth programmes co-ordinator, Aneesa Jacobus, said that the programme created long lasting memories for the children.
“We create a setting that is conducive to personal growth as well as creating lasting memories for the kids.
“We want to teach the kids to be social,” said Ms Jacobus.
The children were also given a meal before the end of each day’s session.
“We would like to thank the volunteers for their valuable input in the programme,” she said.
“The holiday programme was a huge success and we will continue to change lives for the better.
“The YMCA Athlone Y-zone after-school programme continues when school opens for the third term,” she said.
At the programme, which runs from Monday to Friday, children are helped with their homework and can take part in activities such as arts and crafts, sports development, life-skills and leadership.
