Family legacy unravels

The matriarch of the family, Clara, (Petra Baker), second from left, makes soup for Beverley (Robin Botha), Ruth (Tania Lemme) and Jimmy (Thomas van Niekerk).

Milnerton Players will perform Miracle on South Division Street at the Milnerton Playhouse from Friday July 27 and to Saturday August 11.

Written by Tom Dudzick and directed by Judith Herbig, the story follows the Nowaks of Buffalo, New York.

Clara and her three grown kids have always known they were special, ever since the miraculous night in 1942 when the Blessed Mother appeared to Grandpa in his barbershop. Since then, the neighbourhood has looked upon the Nowaks’ 20-foot commemorative shrine as a beacon of hope and faith amid the urban rubble.

Fast forward and the now deceased barber’s daughter, Clara (Petra Baker) believes strongly that the shrine should be maintained.

Her smartass, charming son, Jimmy (Thomas van Niekerk) is in love but he hesitates to tell his mother he is about to propose to a woman who is not a devout Catholic.

Beverley (Robin Botha) the middle daughter, is an avid supporter of mom’s mission but when the youngest daughter Ruth (Tania Lemme) an aspiring actress, unveils her plan to write and star in a one-woman show about the family miracle based on Grandma’s deathbed confessions, “so the whole world will know”, things start to unravel.

Performances are at 8pm on July 27, 28, August 3, 4, 10, 11; and 2.30pm on July 28, August 4 and 11. Tickets cost R80 for matinees and R90 for the evening shows and there are concessions for members. Call 082 267 1061 or email bookings@milnertonplayers.com to book.
