A free jazz music workshop for young musicians will be presented by top Swedish and South African tutors at Paul Roos Gymnasium in Stellenbosch from Friday March 6 to Sunday March 8.

The Youth in Music Excellence (YME) Initiative 2020 is being hosted by the Cape Town Music Academy (CTMA) and the Toyota US Woordfees.

Open to students aged between 14 and 22, the programme consists of focused workshops in various aspects of jazz music. The programme is curated by Gavin Minter, director of Real Wired Music; Schalk Joubert, music director of CTMA; and Dr Andrew Lilley, deputy head of UCT’s Department of Music.

International lecturers include some of Sweden’s top jazz professionals – trumpeter Fredrik Noré* ; award-winning saxophone player, Fredrik Kronkvist; and drummer, Adam Ross. SA tutors also include Nomfundo Xaluva, Reza Khota, Mandisi Dyantyis, Hilton Schilder and Amanda Tiffin.

The workshop will culminate in the selection of a YME Youth Band for senior students with Dr Lilley as band leader.

On Sunday March 8, the selected YME Youth Band will perform, at 6pm, as opening act for Karen Zoid and the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra in the Karen Zoid 20 Years Pops Concert at the Toyota US Woordfees at the Van der Stel sports grounds in Stellenbosch.

If you are interested in taking part in the workshop, email CTMA programme manager, Vicky Davis, on vicky@ctma.co.za before Monday February 17. Places are limited and successful applicants will be notified by Friday February 21.

The course runs full days. Daily lunches will be provided as well as dinner on Sunday evening before the concert.

The course is free of charge, however, once you have received a placement, a R100 registration fee is required. CTMA is a not for profit company (NPC) that seeks to create opportunities for local, established and emerging musicians and related artists in the Western Cape.
