In the next two weeks, fans of Bryan Adams and hard rock band Guns N’ Roses can look forward to tribute shows of their hits at the Hillcrest Quarry in Durbanville.
At the heart of it all is local drummer and musician Jason Oosthuizen who created the shows.
Frank Ferrer, the drummer who has been performing with the real Guns N’ Roses since 2006, will also be playing in the tribute show.
Jason, who shares a few sponsors with Frank, asked him to join the show and he agreed.
“When I told the band (playing the tribute show) I think there were a few near collapses. However now that it’s about to happen everyone is beyond excited,” he said.
Originally from Bellville, Jason attended Table View Primary where he had “some of the best times” of his life.
He has been a member of a string of well-known local bands such as Van Coke Cartel, Fokofpolisiekar and Lost&Found.
After some time in Los Angeles, Jason moved to Johannesburg in 2014 and has been living there ever since.
Last year he replaced drumsticks with an electric guitar and mic as frontman for the band Oooth.
Although a “spur of the moment” decision, it is one he has not regretted.
He said playing for bands like Van Coke Kartel and Fokofpolisiekar taught him a lot.
“One of the main guys I learnt from was Wynand Myburgh. He was our bass player and manager of Fokofpolisiekar and he was and is truly a genius in what he does. I still apply a lot of what I learnt from him in all my ventures today.”
In addition to being involved in Oooth and the tribute shows, Jason has his own coffee brand and clothing line and plans to launch his own wine.
“This year I have brought on a business partner in all my ventures to help assist with my extreme load so I can spend more time on my studio work and live gigs. Life is crazy in my camp but I love it and wouldn’t want it any other way.”
The Bryan Adams tribute show takes places on Sunday March 3 at 2pm. Oooth will play a 45min set followed by the Bryan Adams show which features Dan Patlansky, Jesse Clegg, The Black Cat Bones and more. “This Sunday and The Guns N’ Roses show on the March 15 will really be amazing, and you don’t want to be the one saying ‘I should’ve gone’. Also if locals don’t support the shows, it will become less likely for us to come to Cape Town again so do the right thing and buy your ticket and blow off some steam with some good old rock ‘n roll.”
