With just days to go before this weekend’s inaugural Southern Mail Wynberg Family Festival, there is loads to look forward to, including a variety of more than 70 food, fashion and other exciting stalls.
The festival takes place this Friday and Saturday, March 24 and 25, at the Maynardville carnival grounds in Wynberg.
The venue is opposite the Wynberg Magistrate’s Courts in Church Street, Wynberg. Gates open at 4pm on Friday March 24 and at 11am on Saturday March 25, with festivities running until 11.30pm on both nights.
Close to 50 local artists, DJs and entertainers will be performing, with rising hip hop star YoungstaCPT, from Wynberg, topping the line-up. His performance on Friday night is expected to bring the house down. Other high-profile artists include former Idols winner Karin Kortje, diva Salome Damon and Idols finalist London Louw, to name a few. The highlights of both days are the massive open-air dance parties, which kick off after 7pm on both nights.
There will also be lots of kiddies’ entertainment too, including the Southern Mail kiddies’ zone and rides with a number of exciting activities for the young at heart. Keeping its pulse on Cape Town’s beat, Heart 104.9fm, will be doing two live broadcasts from the event – one on Friday afternoon between 3pm and 6pm with Suga and on Saturday night between 6pm and 10pm with Tyrone Paulsen.
Spot prizes will also be up for grabs, including cash prizes. A limited number of free gifts in the form of skin and body products will be handed out to some of the guests upon arrival.
To keep you further entertainted, the City of Cape Town’s safety and security directorate will have a comprehensive display featuring all its various units, including traffic, Metro police and fire and rescue.
The City’s traffic and law enforcement services will be assisting with traffic and law enforcement arrangements over the weekend. There will also be a number of paramedics from St John’s and an ambulance on stand-by.
The public will also be able to have their blood sugar levels tested for free, as well as have complimentary HIV/Aids testing.
The Community Chest of the Western Cape is one of the beneficiaries of this year’s event.
Festival organiser Rozario Brown, head of Cycle of Life, who founded the popular DStv Mitchell’s Plain Festival, said key objectives of the Southern Mail Wynberg Family Festival included: promoting Wynberg as a stable and viable community to do business in and to encourage tourists to visit the area; to create local employment opportunities; to promote local pride; to promote a healthy family lifestyle and environment by encouraging entire families to attend this event; to provide NGOs and NPOs with a platform to showcase their goods and services and to promote greater levels of social cohesion between communities.
Mr Brown said in line with these objectives, no illegal drugs and substances would be allowed; the event is alcohol-free and therefore no alcohol would be on sale and no food baskets would be allowed as there would be local food vendors on site.
The public is also urged to obey all security and traffic instructions during the event. No parking will be allowed in front of people’s homes on event days. Most of the parking spaces used for the old Community Chest Carnival, will be available.
Ticket prices
Early bird or discounted tickets are available at all Shoprite, Checkers, House & Home and Computicket outlets. Children up to the age of 5 and pensioners enjoy free entry. Pensioners must produce a driver’s license or ID upon entry.
Children aged 6 to 12 pay R35 if you buy your tickets early at any of the above mentioned outlets. Entry is R50 at the gate.
Those 13 and older will pay R50 when buying their tickets upfront and R65 at the gates.
