A Cape Town film-maker is making a name for herself in the film industry in New York.
Produced and directed by Julia Jansch, the documentary My Father The Mover scooped first prize in its category at the world-famous Tribeca Film Festival in New York which is held annually to showcase a diverse selection of independent films.
The documentary tells the story of 32-year-old single father Mthuthuzeli Stoan Galela, the Mover, who offers movement and dance classes in Khayelitsha using African electronic “Gqom” dance and has helped many children to rise above the hardship of township life through dance.
It invites people on an exploration of Gqom dance and movement and introduces the audience to the crucial work of Stoan and is United Township Dancers.
The documentary has also been selected to screen at four Oscar-qualifying festivals.
Ms Jansch posted on her Facebook page that this prize was for all the Movers out there making a difference.
“If ever there was a time that revealed the importance of movement it is now.
“Movement can heal, transcend, transform.
“We will get through these times and we will move again,” she said.
