Pageant puts the role in modelling

The Grade 3 to Grade 5 category has the most contestants.

An Athlone-based theatre production company will host a beauty pageant with a difference – where judging will be based not on who struts their stuff the best – but who will be good role models to help eradicate bullying.

Joeline Daniels from the Anastachia School of Fame, said the Mr and Miss Primary Interschool, which will be held on Sunday April 22, is not your average beauty pageant.

“Through this pageant, we are trying to eradicate bullying, to give confidence to those who have low self-esteem, and to teach life skills. So every time they rehearse, these elements will be of utmost importance. We would like to teach them that beauty is not just what is on the outside, but what comes from within,” Ms Daniels said.

Children from three schools – Vanguard, Portavue and Regina Coeli Primary – will be taking part in the event. There are three age categories, each with a different theme.

Schools participating in the event will also be beneficiaries of the funds raised.

“We know schools struggle financially. The children pay R10 entry fee, and this money will go to the respective schools. The winning school will also receive a token of appreciation, in the form of cash. We are also familiar of what happens in the community because many of the children come from areas like Manenberg and Heideveld, and we are trying to uplift them as well. The winners will all receive prizes. This is a first-of-a-kind and we are hoping to take it to other areas,” Ms Daniels said.

Children will compete in the Grade R to Grade 2, Grade 3 to Grade 5, and Grade 6 and Grade 7 categories.

The pageant will take place on Sunday April 22 at Rylands civic centre, at 1pm. Tickets are R100 for adults and R60 for children under 10. For tickets, which will also be available at the door, contact Ms Daniels at 074 339 9525.
