Some Table View seniors had medical-checks and heard advice on how to stay healthy during a wellness day last week.
More than 100 residents of the Vue du Cap Retirement Village took part in the event at the complex’s clubhouse.
Kathy Paulsen, a nurse at the home, advised the seniors to get regular check-ups and take part in exercises like Zumba, tai chi and yoga.
“Keeping a healthy body is as important as keeping a healthy mind. You need to protect yourself from the elements like the sun. Your spiritual well-being is vital as well as is keeping in touch with friends and family.”
Nutritionist Michelle Mane said people lost up to 8% of their muscle mass every ten years from the age of 40 and 15% every ten years from the age of 70. Some natural supplements could help to slow that process or rebuild lost muscle, she said.
Meagan Davids, a mammographer from breast cancer non-profit Pink Drive, said both men and women should check their breasts, using the flat surface of their fingers and note lumps in the breast or armpit, changes in breast size, or changes to the nipples, including discharge.
“It’s a myth that breast cancer is only a women’s disease,” she said.
