A Bloubergstrand non-profit organisation is appealing to the public to donate unused computers to Sinenjongo High School in Phoenix.
Chris Thwala, the founder of Minds of Good Health, says the computers will be used to set up a training centre to help pupils embrace the digital age, find information useful for their future, apply for tertiary qualifications, and prepare for the workplace.
Mr Thwala said he spent a lot of time at the school and had found that some pupils did not know simple commands, such as how to copy and paste, which is what gave him the idea for computer lessons at the school.
“I want the kids to get the skills of working on computers before they leave school,” he said.
He is also asking anyone with computer skills to volunteer their time to pass on their knowledge to the pupils.
“We are encouraging volunteers to submit a schedule, that fits their availability, to teach the pupils,” he said.
Luvuyo Zulu, the school’s life-orientation head teacher, said the current computer lab only had 14 computers, and could only accommodate pupils studying computer technology as a subject.
He said the ultimate goal was for pupils to learn how to set up a resumé, do accounting on a computer and apply to colleges and universities.
“We would appreciate it if someone who has a passion for working with kids and computers teaches the basics of computers. We dream of having almost every pupil being able to use computers,” said Mr Zulu.
