A beach clean-up was held on Saturday August 22 at Table View beach to honour Liam van Niekerk who survived a near-drowning there on August 17 2019. Liam nearly drowned while attending a beach clean-up with his school, Tafelberg School. He dived into a sandbank injuring his cervical spine and inhaling water. He was pulled from the water by his friend Jordan Lee and a nurse, Karen Jackson, who was on the beach that day. A Community Medics Response vehicle passing by was flagged down to assist Liam. Liam defied a prognosis of paralysis, passed his driver’s licence a month ago and has recently started running. On Saturday, Liam was able to finish the clean-up he had started a year ago. The beach clean-up was attended by, among others, Community Medics members, some of the nurses who cared for Liam in the ICU ward, and his Tafelberg school classmates.
