The City of Cape Town has warned residents of a small sewage spill in front of the Big Bay lifesaving club which has affected a part of Big Bay Beach in the Bloubergstrand area.
The incident resulted from a pump station malfunction which was rectified immediately on notification of the spill. The pump station is operational again and the cause of the malfunction is under investigation.
The affected area has been temporarily closed as a precaution. Natural dispersion will make the water safe within the next 12 hours, but water samples will be taken and tests will be conducted over the weekend.
Members of the public are advised to avoid contact with the water until further notice.
The beach area where the spillage occurred has been cordoned off. Temporary signage is also being erected to advise members of the public of the beach closure.
