A big clean-up of the detention pond off Milky Way Drive, Phoenix, took place on Sunday.
It was spearheaded by members of the WeLoveYou Foundation, an international NGO, and mayoral committee member for water and waste Zahid Badroodien and Ward 4 councillor Anthony Benadie joined in.
Brits van Zyl, from WeLoveYou Foundation’s Cape Town branch, said they hoped their clean-up would encourage the community to take better care of their environment.
Viwe Momoti, from the NGO’s Bellville branch, called on residents to care for their area like a mother cares for her children.
Mr Badroodien said the municipality spent about R30 million a year to tackle illegal dumping.
The polluted detention pond contributed to the pollution of the Milnerton Lagoon, he said.
Mr Benadie appealed to Phoenix residents to stop littering and thanked the WeLoveYou Foundation for its efforts.
