Bombers fire on patroller during car chase

A Milnerton Crime Watch officer was involved in an early morning car chase on Monday with robbery suspects who shot at him with an R5 rifle.

The patrolman was responding to a noise at a nearby KwikSpar on Millvale Road.

When he arrived, he saw a drop safe outside the store had been blown open with explosives.

He also noticed a blue VW Polo fleeing the scene and went in pursuit. Then one of the four suspects in the car opened fire, hitting the patrolman’s car twice and disabling it.

Milnerton Crime Watch project manager Craig Pederson said that the suspects had abandoned the Polo and escaped in another vehicle.

“There were four suspects, and they were headed in the direction of Loxton Road. As the turned in Union Road, they opened fire on the patrol officer. They used an R5 rifle and hit the patrol car twice,” said Mr Pederson.

The police said the robbers were still at large and had escaped with an undisclosed amount of cash.
