An alleged cellphone thief was nabbed in Big Bay on Boxing Day after a number of people reported that their phones had been stolen.
Mayoral committee member for safety and security JP Smith said law enforcement officers had been approached by a member of the public in the Big Bay area on Monday December 26, informing them about a bag which had been stolen on the beach. In the bag, said Mr Smith, were cellphones, car keys and a wallet.
Another group of people also approached the officers to report that their cellphones had been stolen, but that they had managed to to track and locate them. Mr Smith said the officers went to the location where the phones had last reported from and found a bag containing a number of cellphones underneath a car with an occupant inside.
He said while interviewing the suspect, the officers discovered more cellphones and an undisclosed amount of money that the suspect could not account for.
Mr Smith said the victims positively identified the bag inside the car as their own and the suspect was arrested and taken to Table View SAPS. Seven cellphones, a wallet and the car keys were recovered.
