A month after it was formed, the City’s Integrated Roadblock Unit, which targets drunken drivers and motorists with outstanding warrants, has made more than 250 arrests.
Some 171 offences were recorded in the West Coast region. Seven people were arrested on Koeberg Road in Brooklyn for unpaid fines to the value of R6 900. Three more were arrested on Potsdam Road in Dunoon for unpaid fines valued at R7 600.
“While drunk driving and warrants account for most of the arrests, officers have also made several drug-related arrests and arrests for possession of stolen goods and stolen motor vehicles,” said JP Smith, mayoral committee member for safety and security.
The roadblock locations are determined by traffic or crime-related complaints in a given area, high accident numbers or a general lack of law enforcement.
The unit comprises 18 members from the metro police, law enforcement and traffic services and is backed up by the SAPS.
