Ecological burns scheduled

Combflowers (Micranthus tubulosus) are in bloom in the fynbos at the Blaauwberg Nature Reserve.

The City of Cape Town will oversee prescribed ecological burns in several nature reserves in the greater Blaauwberg area over the coming months.

Blaauwberg Nature Reserve is scheduled for February to March.

Sandown Fynbos Corridor in the Table Bay Nature Reserve is scheduled for February to March.

Milnerton Racecourse Conservation Area in the Table Bay Nature Reserve is scheduled for March to April.

“The actual dates are dependent on ideal weather conditions. We will, however, ensure that the surrounding residents are provided with further details of each planned ecological burn once the dates are confirmed so that they can be prepared,” said mayoral committee member for spatial planning and environment, Marian Nieuwoudt.

For safety reasons these reserves, or portions thereof, will be closed to the public on the day of the burning and for a few a days after until the area is deemed safe.
