An environmentally-friendly retelling of a classic fairy tale will be staged in a Table View church hall next month.
Created by George Stiles and Andrew Drewe and directed by Julie Dickson, Honk Jr is a rewrite of the popular fairy tale, The Ugly Duckling, by Hans Christian Andersen.
St Matthew’s Church hall, in Janssens Avenue, will be transformed into a stage for the 25 cast members, aged 8 to 20, who are from The Drama Lab.
The play tells the story of an odd-looking duck called Ugly and his moving journey towards acceptance in his family and in his own heart.
Dickson, an actress, singer and drama teacher, said the sets and costumes for the production were “upcycled recycled and reinvented” from hospice shops and recycle yards.
“From the many plastic bottles, newspapers and hospice shop garments, we have made a colourful ‘green’ show.
“We are super proud of the impact this will have on the mind-set of our young cast, as we prepare for the run,” she said.
The play is choreographed by Waterfront Theatre School graduate Rebecca Hartle, with vocal assistance by Rae Swart, from the Elkanah House music department.
“Punny and hilarious, but also deeply moving, Honk! Jr will treat audiences to equal amounts of laughter and tears,” said Dickson.
Honk! Jr runs from Tuesday May 2 to Saturday May 6, at 7.30pm. There will be three matinees: Friday at 5pm; Saturday at noon and 3pm.
There are 100 seats available for each performance and tickets cost R90. Bookings can be made at Computicket. No children.
