Twenty-six shacks were destroyed in a fire at Site 5 in Dunoon’s Doornbach township this morning, Monday January 6.
According to community leader Zukiswa Kobe, the fire started at one of the double-storey shacks, but the cause was not known.
Spokesperson for the City’s Fire and Rescue Service, Jermaine Carelse, said they received numerous calls at approximately 9.20am of shacks burning in Site 5.
Crews from Goodwood, Epping, Roeland Street, Kraaifontein, Durbanville and Belhar fire stations contained the spread of the fire by 10.10am.
He said no injuries or fatalities were reported.
Ali Sablay, spokesperson for disaster response NGO Gift of the Givers, said their teams had been on the ground to assess the number of structures affected. “Our team will be doing immediate assistance in terms of hot meals and blankets, and tomorrow will be doing further humanitarian aid to the fire victims,” he said.
