Girl guides and their families from various group met at Pinelands Guide Hall on Saturday where they helped to fill more than 2300 jars, called Jars of Hope, with pre-mixed soup ingredients for the needy in honour of Mandela Day.
Organiser Tanya Prinsloo said they beat their goal of filling 1 670 jars with goods donated by members of the public, churches, friends and family.
Two former girl guides, Marion Berrill and Merle Milne, raised R2 000 by sewing on race numbers for Edgemead Running Club members.
Jars would be distributed to Local Helping Locals in Bothasig, Where Rainbows Meet in Vrygrond, Founders Educare in Kommetjie, the City’s Disaster Risk Management, and churches and soup kitchens in Mitchell’s Plain, said Ms Prinsloo.
“We wish to once again thank all our members and every single person who helped make Mandela Day a success this year.”
