City traffic police seized a bag holding 12 guns with their serial numbers filed off after stopping a man in Blaauwberg Road.
According to JP Smith, mayoral committee member for safety and security, officers stopped the driver of a white VW Polo at a roadblock on Sunday morning.
The motorist sped off when a traffic officer questioned him about a suspicious looking red bag in the passenger-seat footwell. After a high speed chase, the man stopped at the Dunoon taxi rank, threw the bag under one of the taxis and ran off.
The traffic officers caught the man and they found the guns inside the bag. The suspect was detained at Table View police station.
