Bothasig SAPS supported by Northlink College held a Mandela Day project at Bothasig Gardens to connect with local residents. The college students and SAPS members formed little groups and visited senior residents and handed out crime awareness pamphlets. The group also ran little errands for the older citizens and tried to make their lives just a little simpler even if it was just for that day. An older resident of Bothasig needed a light bulb fixed and an officer came to her rescue while another needed airtime to contact her family whom she hadn’t spoken to in a while. Wayne Fortuin, one of the Northlink students, who is doing his practical at Bothasig SAPS, said the students had enjoyed the opportunity to engage with the seniors. He emphasised that society and younger people should not forget about seniors and the valuable contribution that they had made in the lives of many people. Later during the day Bothasig SAPS handed over boxes of clothing received from a donor who requested that the clothing he donated be distributed to people in Bothasig who could use it.
