City Law Enforcement plans to crack down on vagrancy, dumping and traffic violations in Joe Slovo Park today, Wednesday February 28.
This was announced by the City Law Enforcement officer Senior Inspector Janine Williams during a sub-council meeting at the Milnerton sub-council offices in Royal Ascot, last week.
She was responding to questions from ward councillor Anthony Benadie who described the conditions in the township as “chaotic”.
“There have to be a number of by-laws being violated at the same time in that area. What can be done in that area because there are so many issues in the area from Omuramba Road, Freedom Way and Democracy Way to name a few?” he said.
Inspector Williams said: “We will be tackling these areas and will be having a big operation. The area has lots of issues: dumping, informal trading, traffic violations, vagrancy and other challenges. It is not always easy because the problems there cannot be fixed in a day, and the City doesn’t have all the resources. But we will always keep doing the best we can for our communities.”
Joe Slovo community leader Sibongile Kofi said he was looking forward to the operation.
“I’m specifically interested in the Omuramba Road part of the operation. I know the City needed people from the community to help with the cleaning. I am happy that our people will be able to help out and get to work and get paid. Issues in our area are big, but it is good to see the City stepping up and doing projects like this,” he said.
Themba Jula, a Joe Slovo resident, said: “I just hope this is not a once-off thing. I know we are very close to elections. All these parties will try to give a helping hand. I hope this is from a pure heart and they really care about the people. Everyone knows our community needs serious intervention.”
