Table View Lions Club celebrated 40 years of providing service to others at an anniversary dinner on Saturday August 27.
The club was started on August 17, 1976, in Table View. It’s one of 46 000 clubs in 200 countries.
“Each area has its own Lions club and we are very active in Table View and Atlantis,” said club president, Thys van Eck.
The club, based in Killarney Gardens, has been involved in many projects over the years, supplying hearing aids to the deaf, contributing to anti-hunger campaigns and helping the disabled. As part of the club’s anniversary celebrations, it’s giving 300 children in Dunoon tickets to the Zip Zap Circus.
“Currently, we are trying to get enough money to buy a school bus for the children at West Riding Primary School. The school is in a good area, but many children who attend the school are impoverished,” said Lions secretary, Felicity van Eck, Thys’s wife.
“Any member can come up with a project, and we all pitch in and help. We do fund-raising and we get sponsors, every cent that comes in from fund-raising goes towards projects,” said Mr Van Eck.
