Traffic police arrested a man at a weekend roadblock in Milnerton for carrying an illegal firearm.
City of Cape Town traffic officers were watching queueing traffic at the intersection of Bosmansdam Road and the N7 north on Sunday when they spotted two passengers getting out of a white Nissan Almera and heading off in different directions.
Safety and security Mayco member JP Smith said one of them had disappeared into the Montague Gardens industrial area while the other boarded a taxi.
Officers managed to stop the taxi and while removing the suspect from the vehicle, he pulled out a firearm and placed it against the vehicle’s windscreen before making a run for it.
He was apprehended after a short sprint and arrested for being in the possession of a Tanfoglio 9mm pistol and ammunition. Officers discovered the serial number had been filed off.
“The matter has been handed over to SAPS for further investigation. Part of the investigation will include establishing whether the firearm could be linked to any criminal incidents,” said Mr Smith.
