On Monday, January 16, shortly after 10pm, Sergeant Jonathan Marthinus and Constable Masixole Baleni from the Table View police station were doing routine crime prevention patrols in Parklands Main Road, when they noticed an unknown male acting suspiciously when he noticed the police officers.
When the officers approached him, he started to run away and the officers gave chase.
Within a few seconds the man was apprehended and during the apprehension a firearm fell to the ground from the suspect’s possession. The firearm was secured and man could not provide the officers with a firearm licence. He was arrested for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
When the serial number of the firearm was tested, it was confirmed that it has been stolen in Bothasig during September 2006.
The suspect was then further charged with possession of a stolen firearm.
The 34-year-old suspect will appear in the Cape Town Magistrate Court tomorrow, Thursday January 19.
