A man was burnt beyond recognition in a fire that destroyed five shacks on a Summer Greens property in the early hours of Sunday.
The fire department received the call shortly after 4.30am and the fire was extinguished by about 5.20am, according to City Fire and Rescue Service spokesman Jermaine Carelse.
No other injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is unknown at this stage, he said, adding that 17 people had been left displaced.
Milnerton police spokeswoman Captain Nopaya Madyibi said an inquest had been opened.
A Summer Greens resident, Tammy Scholtz, said overcrowding was a big problem in the community.
“Incidents like this can be avoided if people weren’t cramming multiple families on properties designed for a maximum of around five people. The City needs to look into this and take a harsher stance on landlords who allow this to happen,” she said.
