A man died and 19 people were hurt, most of them schoolchildren, when a school-transport minibus taxi hit a bakkie making an illegal U-turn on Potsdam Road, in Killarney Gardens, last Friday.
According to ER24’s Ineke van Huyssteen, paramedics arrived on scene shortly before 4pm and found the taxi on its side and the bakkie on its roof.
“Paramedics found two people who had to be extricated from the bakkie.
“Unfortunately, one of the patients had sustained fatal injuries and was declared dead at the scene.
“One other person from the taxi also had to be extricated by Fire and Rescue using the jaws of life,” said Ms Van Huyssteen.
She said the children had suffered minor to serious injuries.
Police are investigating a culpable homicide case.
Table View police spokeswoman Captain Adriana Chandler said CCTV footage showed the bakkie making an illegal U-turn at the traffic light on Potsdam Road opposite Killarney race track.
“While turning, the vehicle was hit by an oncoming taxi, which was transporting school children,” she said.
“When police arrived at the scene, ambulances were already transporting the injured to a nearby hospital,” said Captain Chandler.
