Ward 29 DA councillor Cynthia Clayton is the new chairwoman of Sub-council 1.
She was elected at the sub-council’s meeting on Tuesday November 14, its first after the local government elections.
Ms Clayton, whose ward includes Atlantis, has been a councillor for 10 years. She is the former Sub-council 17 chairwoman and chaired the health portfolio for the past five years.
Service delivery was one of the sub-council’s primary functions, she said.
“Our main struggles are issues related to housing and to have more businesses in the entire sub-council, especially in the Atlantis area, which has been the Cinderella area for more than 40 years.”
Geographically, Sub-council 1 has changed recently and now comprises only Atlantis, Dunoon and Melkbosstrand. “With its wide range of diversity of people and areas, all which come with many challenges, the biggest one being housing in Atlantis and Dunoon, and by all of us working together and towards the same goals we can achieve success and provide the communities we serve with a high level of service delivery,” Ms Clayton said.
She said she was committed to “a high standard of service delivery” and vowed to serve the communities of Sub-council 1 with “diligence and dedication”.
Sub-council 1, previously housed in Milnerton, will move to its new chambers in Atlantis once the building is completed.
