A policeman was wounded in a shootout with armed men who robbed a cellphone shop at Bayside Mall at the
weekend.
Five men entered the mall on Sunday afternoon while two accomplices waited outside in a getaway car.
Table View police spokeswoman Captain Adriana Chandler said the robbers threatened staff and fled with several boxes of cellphones.
The police blocked exit roads and the suspects’ car was spotted not far from the mall.
Four men jumped out of the car shooting at officers before they were all apprehended.
The other three suspects drove off and then two more men jumped out of the car and fired on the officers who returned fire and apprehended both men.
The suspect behind the wheel drove until Ashford Street, in Sunningdale, where he jumped out and ran towards West Coast Road.
When he saw a police vehicle, he fired at the officers, injuring one officer in the arm, before he too was arrested.
“Three firearms were recovered as well as the stolen property. The injured police officer was taken to a nearby medical facility and is recovering from his injury,” said Captain Chandler.
The SAPS Organised Crime Unit is investigating the case.
