Online videos catapult Bothasig singer to stardom

Whitney April from Bothasig says she is grateful for the opportunity to pursue a career in music.

Whitney April from Bothasig is one of Cape Town’s biggest TikTok sensations.

Ms April, 25, was a Grade 1 teacher at Tygerhof Primary School in Milnerton before fame struck.

She has a fan base of more than 100k followers and it was on the app where she caught the attention of an international artist management company.

Ms April resigned as a school teacher when vice-president of Morton Records, Wade Jordan discovered her. Mr Jordan also manages American Grammy award-winning musician, singer, songwriter and record producer PJ Morton.

Ms April said she started posting on TikTok during the Covid-19 lockdown. Last year she was approached by Mr Jordan, who came across her while she was with an a cappella group called Vocal Factory.

“He also came across my solo covers and decided to sign me under his management company this year.”

Ms April said she has always recorded covers but never posted them anywhere, and once she started and got such great feedback from people and requests to do more songs, it made her want to post even more.

“I felt like God was using my voice to touch people.”

Ms April said she resigned as a teacher at the end of the second term of school this year, because the music started to pick up and she wanted to put more time into it.

She said making music is a lifelong dream of hers, but she was never brave enough to pursue it full time.

On Friday September 23, Ms April released her official cover of the classic song, The Prayer, featuring American opera singer Rodrick Dixon.

On new music she is working on, Ms April said she has recorded a Christmas cover which will be released towards the end of this year. She is also working on her EP which will be released next year.

Ms April said she has a long and diverse list of musicians she would love to work with.

However, American singer and songwriter Tori Kelly, American worship choir Maverick City Music, American gospel singer Israel Houghton, as well as American pop singer Selena Gomez top her list of singers she would love to collaborate with one day.

“I love every single one of these artists, the messages they deliver in their music and obviously their talent,” she said.

Ms April said if there was one thing she would want her fans to remember her by, it would definitely be her spirit, as someone who cared greatly for others, inspired them to maybe do more or someone God used to bring light in this world.
