Armed Forces Day is held every year on the anniversary of the sinking of the SS Mendi tragedy which occurred more than a century ago. The SS Mendi tragedy is remembered as the deadliest maritime disaster in South Africa’s history. Armed Forces Day has been held in seven provinces. This year, it was held in Cape Town. Thousands of troops took part in the week long events.Â

The day was to celebrate members of the South African Armed Forces.
