Planned burn for Table Bay Nature Reserve

The public can have their say on the City of Cape Town’s plans to burn about two hectares of the Milnerton Racecourse section of the Table Bay Nature Reserve to help regenerate critically threatened fynbos.

The City wants to do the burn, weather permitting, sometime between Thursday March 15 and Sunday May 20.

Smoke from the burn could temporarily affect residents and businesses in the Royal Ascot, Milnerton and Milnerton Ridge areas. Residents in the Royal Ascot Estate will be notified of the date for the burn by letters and emails from their body corporates.

The City said residents should shut their windows during the burn and remove laundry from washing lines to stop it smelling of smoke.

The City said its environmental management department staff, supported by fire and rescue, would do the burn, using only “manual fire control methods” witout potable water because of the water crisis.

There would be a standby supply of non-potable water in case of emergency and all wildlife would be removed from the area prior to the burn, said the City.

Objections or comments can be sent to the City’s air quality management department for the attention of Bronwyn Davidson at Bronwyn.Davidson@capetown.gov.za within seven days of the publication of this notice.
