Police are investigating after a taxi owner was shot dead at a petrol station in Joe Slovo Park last week.
The 32-year-old man was found in his vehicle, shot in the head, at the Caltex garage on Koeberg Road near the Sun1 hotel on Thursday October 26, said provincial police spokesman Sergeant Wesley Twigg.
“The victim was declared deceased on the scene by paramedics. The suspect fled and is yet to be arrested. Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stop on 08600 0111,” said Sergeant Twigg.
Nceba Enge, secretary general of the Cape Organisation for the Democratic Taxi Association (Codeta), said they did not believe the shooting was taxi-related, as had been assumed by some members of the public.
“I can confirm that one of our members was killed. He was operating from Joe Slovo. We don’t know the motive for the killing, but we know it was not taxi-related violence. It could have been a personal matter, which has nothing to do with taxis. However, we are still trying to find out what happened,” he said.
However, Joe Slovo Park resident Themba Gova, was not convinced that the shooting was unrelated to taxi conflict.
“We are not stupid. We know when things like this happen. Next we will hear of a retaliation, and then before we know it, we have a full blown war on our hands that will end up spilling over to us innocent civilians. We are on edge right now and it is not fair that when these taxis have disagreements, we bare the brunt of their fights,” he said.
