Law enforcement officers retrieved a paramedic’s vehicle after it was stolen from an accident scene at Sunset Beach in Table View on Saturday night.
Community Medics spokeswoman Jolene Page said their response vehicle attended to a car accident on the R27 just after 10pm on Saturday June 11.
An Opel was found turned on its roof, blocking both lanes of traffic, she said.
For safety reasons, the medic’s vehicle was parked in front of the Opel to warn motorists of the overturned car, while medics attended to the driver who was still stuck inside the car.
“He was assessed and made it out of the car, where police then started questioning him,” she said.
While being questioned, the man jumped into the medic’s car and fled the scene.
The City’s law enforcement and armed response on the scene gave chase and a suspect was found in Muizenberg later that evening, said Ms Page.
“We thank every person and all agencies involved that assisted in this successful recovery. We are truly grateful our vehicle is back safe and that no one was injured during the high-speed chase. As Community Medics is a non-profit organisation and only funded by donations, this would have been a huge setback to our organisation if the vehicle and equipment was not recovered,” she said.
She said that Community Medics had opened a vehicle-theft case at Milnerton police station and the vehicle was still in police’s possession for further investigation.
Milnerton police spokesperson Captain Nopaya Madyibi said the suspect was arrested on charges of possession of stolen property, driving while under the influence, reckless and negligent driving, and resisting arrest.
