Ex-pupils of Observatory Girls’ High school met for their annual get-together, on Friday November 15, at the Italian Club in Milnerton. The group ranging in age from 74 to 82, have made it an annual tradition to meet for lunch since the early 1980s. Also welcome at lunch each year is the women’s “favourate Afrikaans teacher”, Helene de Villiers. “She was unable to join us this year, but we love her. We were all English-speaking pupils, but we enjoyed Afrikaans because of her,” said Tess Brin, of Tygerhof. Patsy Dumas, of Constantia, said Obsevatory had been a tight knot community back then. “We all knew each other. Many of us went to the junior and senior school together,” she said. Observatory Girls’ High was amalgated with Observatoty Boys’ High in 1978 and was renamed Rhodes High School.
