Rietvlei was smothered by a blanket of dark smoke before sunrise on Monday, August 28 as a large area of vegetation caught alight.
According to Theo Layne, the City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services spokesperson, the fire started at 5.59am and was doused by 9.24am.
He said 19 firefighters from Milnerton, Melkbosstrand, Atlantis, Goodwood and Epping fire stations responded. Three fire engines and two water tanks were used to fight the fire. He said no property was damaged.
Councillor Suzette Little, mayoral committee member for area north, said about 1.7 hectares were burnt and that it was mainly reeds.
