Vusumzi Mpendu, 30, from Site 5 in Table View was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment at the Cape Town Regional Court, for robbery; assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm and possession of a dangerous weapon on Monday April 11.
Mpendu was arrested on August 13 last year after he was caught with another suspect who attacked a man with a knife in Circle Road, near West Riding Primary school, and robbed him of his cellphone.
“The men attacked the complainant and robbed him of his cellphone after stabbing him seven times on the back of his body. A member of the community assisted the complainant and Table View SAPS were called to the scene. One of the suspects ran away, but Mpendu was arrested on the scene,” Table View SAPS media spokesperson, Lieutenant Adriana Chandler.
After the arrest, it was established that Mpendu was a repeat offender, and was denied bail every time he appeared in court, before eventually being sentenced.

Employees opened the store shortly before 7am and 15 minutes later, three unknown men, one armed, entered the store and instructed the staff to lie down.
The men demanded to know where the money was kept and one of the employees was instructed to open the safe and lie down on the floor again.
“The suspects tried to force another safe open with a knife, but the attempt failed. The suspects then fled the scene and took an undisclosed amount of cash,” said Lieutenant Chandler.
