Sassa reassures beneficiaries

Social grants will be paid as usual and on time, even beyond April 1, says the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA).

In a statement on Friday January 27, Sassa said it had “been inundated with concerns regarding what happens after the current social grant payment contract with Cash Paymaster Services (CPS) expires at the end of March”.

This comes after a Constitutional Court ruling in 2014, which tasked the Department of Social Development with taking over payments of social grants from current service provider CPS.

This was due to irregular tender processes in appointing CPS. The court case is still ongoing.

Social Development MinisterBathabile Dlamini set up a task team to look at how Sassa could take over the payment of social grants from the beginning of April.

Sassa will present that plan to Parliament’s social development portfolio committee today, Wednesday February 1.

Sassa Western Cape spokeswoman Shivani Wahab, said: “There will be no disruptions in the system. There is therefore no need to panic from the side of beneficiaries.”
