An Uber driver was shot and killed in Summer Greens on Saturday night.
Robbers accosted Khumbulani Sibindi, 35, while he was sitting in his white VW Polo Vivo loading airtime he had just bought at a nearby shop on the corner of Summer Greens Drive and Ploughman’s Crescent.
He was shot when he refused to hand over his car, say police. The robbers pulled him out of the car and left him to die on the ground as they sped off.
“It’s a very terrible thing that happened in our community,” said Reagan Croeser, the chairman of the Summer Greens Neighbourhood Watch (SGNW). “There has been a surge in the crime in the area, and I must say that SAPS has increased its presence.”
Uber spokeswoman Samantha Allenberg said Mr Sibindi had been off duty at the time of the shooting.
“This is an awful crime and our thoughts are with his family. I know it did not happen on a trip and he was not using our technology around the time,” she said.
Provincial police spokesman Captain FC Van Wyk said police were investigating but there had been no arrests.
