Statement coats to brighten up your wardrobe

This pre-loved red puffer jacket with faux fur detail on the hood can be worn on any occasion and can be paired with most of the staples in your wardrobe.
This month’s column is all about pre-loved winter coats. Even though winter is almost over, I guarantee you we haven’t seen the last of the winter chills.

Over the past two months, I have seen many stalls pop up across the city selling good quality second-hand coats.

It reminds of the great winter bargains I bought at the Grahamstown National Arts Festival in 2016. The market area at the festival is usually bustling with festival-goers looking for bargains. I remember buying three woollen scarves for R30. A feat I would not have achieved in Cape Town, that’s for sure.

While strolling through Grand Central in the CBD last week I came across Nandi’s Fashion.

She sells good quality men’s and women’s second-hand coats that range between R200 and R300.

If you pop outside, you can browse through their cheaper ones selling for R150.

In Adderley Street in the CBD there is a stall where you can buy second-hand finds for R200.

Over the past two winter seasons I have not done a lot of layering.

I put that down to the evolution of my personal style: I prefer wearing a top, polo neck or jersey with a statement coat thrown over.

As a journalist, who is constantly on the move, you won’t believe the number of beanies, scarves and gloves I have lost over the years.

However, I am all about simplicity and ease at the moment.

You can’t go wrong with a good trench coat and I am currently obsessed with my navy blue melton cowl neck trench coat.

And remember the wise words of Ann Klein as you brave the cold this winter: “Clothes aren’t going to change the world; the women who wear them will”.

Happy Women’s Month!
