Residents and the neighbourhood watch are concerned about robberies in Summer Greens especially in the evenings and during load-shedding.
Last Friday evening, WhatsApp groups went into a frenzy with residents reporting a robbery at the Summer Greens shopping centre.
Summer Greens Neighbourhood Watch chairman, Craig Alexander, told Tabletalk two armed men robbed a shop around 7.40pm on Friday June 2.
“One jumped over the counter and took cigarettes and cash. They got away but no one can tell if they were on foot or in a car. The police was there but the owner didn’t want to close the shop for them to get fingerprints taken. He argued that he will lose further business. He was also concerned about disclosing how much was taken. He indicated that he will open a case but I haven’t confirmed again whether he did,” he said.
Milnerton SAPS have yet to confirm this incident after several unanswered calls and emails from Tabletalk.
Residents say they are scared especially during winter when it gets dark quickly and load shedding continuous.
Terry Thatcher said she was afraid for her children’s lives.
“I have a 10-year-old son and seven-year-old girl. They play at the park most days but sometimes go to the shops. What if one day they get caught in the middle of these brazen robberies? They can happen at any hour of the day,” she said.
Mr Alexander said that robberies were a concern in the community and spaza shops were also being targeted.
“It’s been happening quite often and all with the same modus operandi – males in a vehicle robbing people in the streets of their cellphones. We had five reported incidents in May all happening between 7pm and 9pm. These are usually load shedding times and also with winter it’s dark already. Another incident was reported to us yesterday (Sunday) where a spaza shop was robbed,” he said.
