Thieves pounce on computer store in Canal Walk

Five armed robbers hit a computer store in Canal Walk at the weekend and took iPads and cellphones.

According to Milnerton police spokeswoman Captain Nopaya Madyibi, two suspects were arrested after a high-speed chase from Century City to Parow on Sunday September 22.

Provincial police spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Andre Traut said: “The suspects were pursued by members of the mall’s security, and during a high-speed pursuit, the robbers collided with a motorcyclist on the corner of Giel Basson Drive and Uys Krige Drive (near Plattekloof).

“They proceeded to flee, and on the corners of Giel Basson Drive and Voortrekker Road (Parow), they again collided with another vehicle, whereafter they fled further on foot.”

Flying Squad officers and Parow police arrested two of the suspects.

They also seized a 9mm pistol and recovered stolen goods from the VW Polo used by the robbers.

“The three robbers who managed to evade arrest are being sought by police. The motorcyclist and the motorist involved in the two collisions were not seriously injured,” said Lieutenant Colonel Traut.

The two suspects are due to appear in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court today on charges of armed robbery, possession of an unlicensed firearm and reckless and or negligent driving.

Canal Walk Shopping Centre CEO Gavin Wood said no one had been injured during the robbery.

“But we are aware of light injuries that were sustained during the SAPS chase of the vehicle.

“Due to the security measures taken by the centre, this led to the identification and arrest of the suspects.

“We continually assess and modify security measures as needed. We are working closely with the SAPS on this case,” said Mr Wood.

Police and Canal Walk management did confirm which computer shop had been robbed.
