Drought is the “new normal” for Cape Town, Mayor Patricia de Lille said at the City’s Think Water exhibition at Canal Walk on Sunday June 11. “We must remember that we will never get the kind of rain that we used to have,” said Ms De Lille. “It is also a matter of supply and demand. Cape Town is growing. The more people move to the city, the more people will be using water, and therefore we have to continue to save water.
“The new normal is that we will continue to have droughts. We are in a drought-stricken area and therefore we need to plan accordingly.”
The City had employed hundreds of young people to fix leaks across the metro, and every Capetonian had a responsibility to fight the water crisis. “Let’s save the water while we still have it,” she said.
