Talking about child sex abuse is still largely taboo, yet it’s in the silence that surrounds it that predators thrive.

So says the ACVV Koeberg, a non-profit child-protection organisation, which is raising awareness about child sexual abuse in the run-up to the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children Campaign.

The annual global campaign runs from November 25 to December 10.

The organisation, based in Melkbosstrand, has been sharing tips on its Facebook page to protect children from sexual abuse.

Here are some of them:

  • Teach children accurate names of private body parts.
  • Teach children accurate names of private body parts.
  • Teach children accurate names of private body parts.

Make a habit of asking your child these questions privately:

  • Teach children accurate names of private body parts.
  • Teach children accurate names of private body parts.
  • Teach children accurate names of private body parts.
  • Teach children accurate names of private body parts.
  • Teach children accurate names of private body parts.

Social worker Este Hugo, said they wanted to encourage “healthy, constructive discussions” that could support community efforts to protect children.

“As social workers, we often provide support to families who have to deal with the harsh reality of a sexual abuse disclosure.

We became critically aware that child sexual abuse is still a very taboo topic in the community. Perpetrators thrive in this culture of silence that surrounds child sexual abuse,” said Ms Hugo.

ACVV Koeberg plans to hold an information session, the date for which will be announced on its Facebook page, ACVV Koeberg.
