Turning the tide

Neliswa Hamana, of Summer Greens, is one of the 792 female municipal employees who are being honoured by the City during Women’s Month. Based in Ndabeni Ms Hamana has worked for the City’s recreation and parks department for nine years. She oversees operational planning; monitors teams and resources, such as heavy machinery, tools and herbicides; conducts investigations; and responds to public enquiries. “Women have the innate ability to make the most of the little that we have,” she says, “so I encourage everyone to believe in themselves and know that nothing can stop you from achieving your dreams.” Dr Zahid Badroodien, mayoral committee member for community services and health, said women in the department did jobs that were still seen by some as men’s work, but they were “slowly turning the tide”.
