An upgraded petrol station, offices and two fast food restaurants could be on the cards for 1 Koeberg Road if the development application gets approval from the City of Cape Town.
The corner property borders Koeberg Road and Conway Street. A Total garage, the Bonjour Cafe and Steers are on the premises.
The proposed two-storey development, if approved, will have McDonald’s and KFC drive-thrus, and the Total garage will be demolished to make way for a new petrol station and convenience shop with office facilities above it.
The closing date for objections and comments is Friday August 28.
“The completion of the office will give an opportunity for skilled workers to be employed by the various companies that would rent out the spaces. There will be office space available for self-employed workers that will be able to share facilities such as boardrooms and offices for affordable rates,” says the development application.
It also says the development will have 24-hour security monitoring as well as toilets, ramps and parking for disabled persons.
Mayoral committee member for spatial planning and environment, Marian Nieuwoudt, said the cost of the development was not yet known.
“The proposed new KFC restaurant incorporates a manager’s office within its ground floor layout. Although the exact size of such an office is not provided, the overall building nevertheless remains within the allowable size-related development rules applicable to the zoning of the property,” she said.
Fay Vogel, the chairwoman of the Brooklyn, Ysterplaat and Rugby Residents’ Association (BYRRA), hopes the development will create jobs for the community.
“They should be given first preference, since we have many skilled and semi-skilled youngsters who are unemployed,” she said.
The development would also help to eliminate the “illegal braais” that the association had been battling for years, she said.
