A woman believed to be in her 20s was found dead in a car in Brooklyn last week.
Maitland police have opened an inquest.
According to provincial police spokesman Siyabulela Malo, the woman was found inside a Toyota Avanza at a Janphil Court, a block of flats in Justin Street, on Wednesday at about 12.30pm.
“The age and identity of the deceased is yet to be determined,” he said.
No arrests have been made.
Fay Vogel, of the Brooklyn, Ysterplaat and Rugby Residents’ Association (BYRRA), said they had complained to the police about abandoned cars at the block of flats.
“There are about four or five cars parked there and it’s clear that they are just abandoned. The girl that died was found in one of those cars. This is posing as a serious danger and it seems like law enforcement and the police don’t care about this.”
Justin Kumlehn of the Maitland CPF said there were rumours the dead woman was a prostitute “but that has no significance as a woman is dead and that what led up to this needs to be investigated”.
