Tygerberg Hospital auditory unit staff Nabeelah Slamang, Elise Abrahams, Sadika Parker, Amanda Mbasa and Lee-Anne Hector marked World Hearing Day on Sunday March 3 to raise awareness about hearing loss to raise awareness about hearing loss, which afflicts more than 460 million people globally. Tygerberg Hospital provides audiology services to children and adults, including fitting hearing aids, allowing people to communicate and take part in everyday conversations and life. Hospital spokeswoman, Laticia Pienaar, said: ‘If the hearing loss is undetected and intervention has not begun as soon after birth as possible, children with hearing loss do not develop normal speech and language, and are also more likely to have emotional and cognitive difficulties. Later in life this causes poorer literacy and academic performance.”
