Western Province Athletics (WPA) will meet early next month to consider sacking financial board member Allen Barnes, of Edgemead, who has been charged with fraud involving
WPA chairman Jakes Jacobs said a special general meeting on February 6 would consider a motion to remove Mr Barnes, 53, as a board member and recall him from all WPA structures.
According to a WPA letter, which Tabletalk has a copy of, the reason for the motion to remove Mr Barnes is his “alleged breach of WPA constitutional rules, regulations and or code of conduct”.
Meanwhile, Mr Jacobs said the association had launched an internal investigation into “certain irregularities involving Mr Barnes”.
But he declined to say more about the investigation at this stage.
“We have to go through the proper procedures though as we have a constitution to follow. We are only in the beginning stages of our investigation but we are looking into the matter.”
On Monday January 20, Mr Barnes was released on R5 000 bail after appearing in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court.
Earlier this month, Mr Barnes was reported missing after he didn’t arrive at the Straggler’s Beachcomber race in Strandfontein.
Police later said they were following up leads that he had been seen at Grandwest Casino on the morning of his disappearance.
Mr Barnes had been driving his fiancée’s silver Toyota Corolla on the morning of his disappearance and when the car was later found at the Cape Town International Airport, the search for him extended to Gauteng, where he was arrested on Friday January 10 and made a brief court appearance on Monday January 13.
Mr Barnes is due to appear in court again on Thursday April 30.
