Gutsy Milnerton get the better of Gugs

Milnerton Cricket Clubs Matt Snyman goes on the defence during his teams 68-run victory against Gugulethu Cricket Club in a WPCA First Division A one-day match at the weekend.

Milnerton Cricket Club’s Malcolm Cloete’s four-wicket haul helped his team beat Gugulethu by 68 runs during a Western Province Cricket Association (WPCA) First Division A one-day match at the NY49 sports complex in Gugulethu on Saturday.

Gugulethu won the toss and elected to bowl first, limiting Milnerton to 125 runs all-out after 42.2 overs.

The last time these two sides met, Gugulethu won by 13 runs thanks to Mncedisi Tyhilo’s century.

On Saturday, Milnerton started the batting very slow as a result of the pitch being in favour of the bowlers.

Milnerton’s opening batsmen, Ryan Milne scored eight runs from 30 balls, and his teammate Matthew Snyman was caught behind by Siyabonga Madonono on the first ball he faced from the bowler, Mthiwekhaya Nabe.

Third-place batsman, Damian Crowley scored an important 42 runs off 88 balls to help his team reach the 125 score mark.

Milnerton’s bowlers had a superb comeback to bowl out Gugulethu for 57 runs.

They were on top of their game, in particular Cloete, following his 4/7 runs, with six maidens after eight overs. Cloete’s bowling economy averaged 0.9 runs.

Opening bowler, Luke Petersen received 1/16 runs after seven overs. Sean Roach got 3/22 runs after seven. And spinner, Maximilian Waller grabbed 2/9 runs with three maidens after eight overs.

Coach Craig Phillips’ side will hope to keep the winning momentum going when they travel up to Kraaifontein on Saturday.

The on-form Kraaifontein side had the better of Tygerberg on Saturday, winning by three wickets.

Kraaifontein’s captain, Craig Ephraim led his team to victory after having a good day with both the bat and the ball. He received five wickets (5/30 runs) and scored an unbeaten 53 runs off 81 balls.
